I've got a '97 540i with automatic 5-speed, and when I drop it down to 4 (on the gear selector there's P-R-N-D-4-3-2), an "S" appears in the gear selection area of my instrument cluster, directly above where it says "4". Does anyone know what this means?

In the 5-speed automatic transmission (non-steptronic), you can either use D (standard drive) mode for normal gear changes, or step down to 4th to engage the Sport Program (S stands for Sport). This gives you more low-speed power as the gear ratios change to provide quicker acceleration at the expense of some fuel economy.

:P Yeah, I just got it last month--I just never knew about that feature. I mean, it seems to haul ass pretty good just leaving it in "D". I'll have to do some runs in sport mode. You couldn't expect me to know EVERY little detail about it before I bought it, right?
