hi,
im new to these forums,
as well as to owning a bmw . . .
(ok i dont own one yet . . . but thats why im here)
i have owned a 1966 porsche 912 for 2.5 years,
and it recently stopped running, so i am selling it,
and buying an old 5 series -
i think an 88 528e . . .
im 21 and in college, so this is really low budget,
ive always had a love for this particular bmw,
and when friends tell me to just buy an old honda,
i cringe . . .
anyway,
88 528e
202,000 miles,
fully loaded - he wants 1600$ ,
i think ill get it for 1300$
anyway . . .
what do i check for when buying these cars?
do you think i should take it to a mechanic to check it out?
will they charge me to do that ?
ive driven a few in the past few days (528e),
and while this is the slowest,
it seems to be the best one,
he has all the service records going back to original,
it has original radio (which i think means more then just a radio,
means no one tried to trick it out in anyway . . .)
looks nice,
fully loaded . . .
(except a small tear on the drivers seat , and a lil dent )
the other ones i drove were a lot more powerful,
and ripped through gears a lot faster . . .
(these are all manual cars, i dont know how to drive automatic
i was thinking maybe its just cause the car was driven slow
for a very long time,
or maybe its not firing all cylinders ?
it didnt feel like that .. . but what do i know
here's a link for where the car is if you want to see pictures . . .

any advice at all would be greatly appreciated -
looking forward to joining the club
