I have a 1995 e34 525I just purchased a few weeks ago . how do I tell if I have the engine with VANOS . and is there any advantage or disadvantage
by having it . thanx in advance.
From the year of your car, I would say no you dont have Vanos, which is one thing less to worry about, advantages in my opinion ....not many really, apart from when it goes wrong..expense.

Yes you do have vanos. I have a 1994 e34 525i and 93 was the 1st year of vanos with the m50 engine. As far as advantage, who knows. Around town I get 17 mpg's. However, the engine that we have is bulletproof. As long as you service it regularly and don't overheat it, you will get great service out of it. The engine produces 192 hp stock. That model has a cast iron block, not that aluminum crap that they use today. Any other questions about the car, pm me or post on this thread. Check out my ride in the member's garage.
What's wrong with alloy blocks? As long as the cylinders aren't lined with Nikasil, the weight advantage is hard to ignore; alloy blocks weigh about 2/3's as much as iron.
You have vanos. It's better for low end power I believe, but if it ever starts to rattle, you'll wish you never had it.
And yes, there's a way to tell visually ... I'm having a hard time finding pictures though. There's like a lump to the front of the valve cover on the vanos engines.
