I thought I read on one of the forums that BMW issued an upgraded motion sensor detector that wasn't as sensitive on the 5's (I have a 528i - 1997) that could replace the older more sensitive one. The one on my car goes off frequently on its own - can the sensitivity be adjusted, or do I replace it with a newer one?
I am not aware of any adjustments; but what you can do is cancel the motion sensor part lets say at night only without compromising the alarm system integrity. Procedures ?It is all in the manual

Disable the motion sensor by pressing the arm button on the key right after and you will see the red LED under the center mirrior will go solid then blink again. If you dont have the remote key then turn key to lock/arm the car then turn it again in the same dirrection and the LED will go solid then blink again like normal.
Talked to my service guy today and apparently there are issues with the original motion sensor. Several things could set it off and a new type was designed using a different method of sensing so it wouldn't go off as easily, so I have ordered it in. I was also told I could just disable the old one by removing a wire. I was hitting the lock button twice to disable the motion sensor.
