I have a 97 UK spec 523i SE (E39) and the compressor is making a bit of a racket but it's only the bearing.
I've been told that if it's a Bosch compressor it's an expensive fix (sealed unit, circa 500 quid +) but if the compressor is made by Nippondenso you can change the bearing and the total repair cost will be significantly less (approx 150-175 quid).
My question is how do I know what make it is without getting it in the garage and getting halfway through the repair befoer I know what the bill is going to be?
I have been over the comperssor with a magnifying glass (it's still on the car working) and can find no make, model, brand naming or anything) soI wondered if there were certain models that had either make or whether they changed dependant on year/continent of sale etc - anyone any ideas?
Thanks
