94 540i: Feels like the brakes ar on when trying to move forward. changed transmission oil and filter. Still having issues. Drove fine after oil change. Then second test drive the car felt like the brakes are full on. Could there be a brake issue versu a transmission issue?
Brakes are cheaper to fix so start with that. If possible remove the wheel and look at the brake pads. Are they up against the rotor? Is the rotor tough to turn? Again if possible, remove the caliper. Inspect the pistol seal. If the seal is damaged or worn mositure can get into the piston creating rust and causing it to sieze.
Best way to determine if you have a transmission related issue is to have the OBD system scanned for trouble codes. If their is a problem with the tranny it will store a DTC, even if it doesnt trigger a CEL.
Hello Lord Vador,
Thank you for your reply. So I just jacked up the back of the car. With the parking brake off the wheels only turn forward and not in reverse, in all positions except park. I would think it would go in both directions in neutral. Wheels turn freely with normal drag.
