Transmission Distick Removal

I just replaced the radiator in my 1991 525i and now want to check the automatic transmission fluid level. The problem is how do I get the dipstick out of the tube? Is there a trick to this? I have pulled fairly hard on it and it won't come out. Furthermore is there any special way I should be checking the transmission fluid level in this car. What fluid is best to put in?

you have to push the top of the dipstick down and kinda also push it towards the arrow..there really is a little trickery(sp) to it. im currently having troubles with my 91 525i transmission too and that was really annoying. goodluck with yours!
