I have a 95 540i. The transmission has been clunking when downshifting (automatic) at about 35mph. Has anyone heard of this happening before? Feels like it's coming from the back of the car. I had BMW look at it and they found metal shavings inside the tranny case and said I need a new tranny. About $6,000. Ouch. If I do need a new tranny, does it make sense to try to find one from a wrecked 540 or go for new? Please help. Thanks.

I did take a chance by getting a complete engine from an auto wrecker; I cann't say it is less than perfect saved so much $$ over new/rebuilt....so I would consider a used tranny especially if it comes out of a newer model (low miles) and fits yours

Thanks. Been looking around online and there appear to be a few places that sell rebuilt trans.

defiantly try and find one with low miles atleast less than 100K. those older cars seem to have trnsmission issues once they get some miles on them.
