Hi,just developed a knocking from rear of car, noise seems to be coming from the dif,it's an e34 525td,it dies off to quite silent when clutch is depressed,or when power is balanced to the wheels(between accelarate and deccelarate)the noise itself is a loud clicking/banging,which gets louder on accelaration checked dif oil,ok,could it be the shafts with the noise travelling to the diff, could really use some help on this as finding these cars is not easy and cant afford to buy diff and shafts for ellimination purposes.
I think i found my problem, had it up on stands and ran the engine(in gear, this is not recommended for the faint hearted)where the shaft slots in to the diff,it looks like some kind of bearing has gone in the diff(not the shaft flange)it has bolts securing to the diff, but can this bit be changed or is it a new diff?anyone know if a (93-94)e34 540i diff will fit?this is the only e34 i can find locally?or will the e36 td fit?
