Hello everyone! I am a new user and have enjoyed this web site, but now I need help. I have a 525i that I can't figure out. My dash reads( trans program)
after I drive it for about 10 minutes. I had the filter and fluid changed and then this problem happened. when the trans program comes on I loose power to everything. But after a few hours I can drive it again and within 10 minutes this happens again. Enyone have any input. Happy new years!
When I first got my E34 I was getting the Trans Program message all the time. The piece of plastic that covers the opening where the gear selector handle comes through the console was missing. After replacing that, the problem got better and now hasn't re-appeared for over a year.
It seems that a switch in the console that indicates the selected position can get dirty causing this message.
Believe it or not, I have seen many times where people have changed the filter/fluid on a high mileage trans and have run into the same problem as you. These transmissions adpapt themselves to the fluid in the trans (elementary explanation). This is why BMW uses "lifetime" fluid with their transmissions.

Thank you EXtech. Is the computer telling the car to shut down? All kinds of warning lights are popping up, like check brake fluid and eng light. Thanks again
I was told by a machanic today that any time there is some kind of change in the transmision, ( trans program will show) . Maybe you don't have a problem or it isn't that bad yet. I guess I am going to have to spend the money to do a full check up.
Transmission starts to slip (flare), there is a low "boom" from the tranny, and a "bing" from the dash.
Transmission locks in "limp" mode - 3rd gear so you can "limp" home or to your nearest dealer.
Message on Dash "TRANS PROGRAM - Consult Owners handbook".
NOTE: This only happens once the car has warmed up - usually after 15-30 minutes of good driving. The car is fine when still cold.
Things to check before even contemplating a transmission overhaul:
Check electrics - Alternator and battery.
Replace DME Relay and Fuel Pump Relay - not expensive.
Remove disassemble, clean and reassemble gear selector switch - If it looks beyond saving, replace ($200)
Service the transmission ($130 from a specialist) and check/replace transmission speed sensor ($90)
