Hey gang,

I am a newbie.

I took home an 01 540i with a Dinan 4 package and 37K miles yesterday. What a car. This could potentially be I first BMW.

Anyway, I have not officially bought it yet, until I get an independent inspection. Last night after driving it around for 2 hours, the car would make this strange noise while idling and the clutch was not engaged. When the clutch was engaged, I couldn't hear the noise.

This morning, I went outside to warm up the car. While it was warming up, I didn't hear the noise. Driving to work, I still didn't hear it again.

I am afraid that when I bring it to the inspection this afternoon, the strange noise at idling will not occur. Then I need to decide whether to purchase this car.

What do you guys think the idling problem is? Is it a major transmission or clutch issue? Any ideas how I can make sure to reproduce the problem?

All help would be appreciated especially since I need to make a decision this afternoon.

Thanks

Paul

Pamato

The gearbox primary shaft rumbles when the car idles in neutral when the clutch is not depressed. This is normal and yes the noise does disappear when the clutch is depressed. In other cars (not sure about Bimmers though) when you rev the engine passing the mark 1200 RPM the noise also disappear.

regards
