Can you put a trailer hitch on a 2000 540i Sport?

I dont want to tow anything, just want to use it for a bike rack.

Thanks, Jason.

I would suggest looking for the web sites for Hidden Hitch, U-Haul, and some of the other major hitch manufacturers. There's probably fitment info on one or more of those. And just because one manufacturer doesn't make one for the E39 doesn't mean another one won't. I've seen hitches in some unlikely places, such as the rear of a 4-cylinder Honda Accord...

I'm sure there is plenty of places out there that will create a hitch for you - e39 did come with the optional "towing"package which consisted of a slide out towing hitch through a removable panel in the bumper, plus the uprated suspension. This can be retro fitted but would most likely cost a fortune due to the suspension upgrade (which is hardly appropriate for mounting a couple of pushbikes). Just do a web search and I'm sure you will find someone to fit one for you without the BMW expense or if you want to be extravagant go for the BMW option which is of course, "hidden when not in use".
