Get a used Honda Civic VX (1992-1995), and have upper-40's mpg, save a mint of maintenance and repairs, and have a blast drivng the thing around. The clock from the EX model is a direct retrofit, and get a passenger side mirror off e-Bay (the VX came with neither). On top of all that, you can counter muscle atrophy in your arms cranking window up and down because you won't have electric windows.

Seriously. I used to have one. Bought it for $3K, drove it to death, spent nearly nothing on repairs, and sold it for $1950. You should be able to find a lower mileage example in nicer shape than mine was for what your 525 is worth...
