I have a 2000 540i Sport AT that Im looking to trade on a new Porsche Cayman. The dealer is telling me that the whine that he hears is indicates a bad torque converter. It shifts fine and just had the 60,000 check and got a clean bill of health.
I call BS on this, how can you tell if a torque converter is bad by listening and not noticing it in the ride? Plus, he says that its like $3000 to replace! He wants to take that much off of the price he offers me!!! Robery!
So, couple questions, can you tell this much from listening and is $3000 way to much for a Torque Converter replacement? And, can you evaluate the health of the torque converter easily or do you have to do some deep diagnostid?
I think I know the answers, but would greatly value all of your input.

To play it save?
Get a second opinion; that is to say go to another dealer and listen to what he has to say. and since you trading the car in, it does not matter whether it is a converter problem or not...The issue here is the $3000!
Good luck and tell us how you make out.
