I need some new all season tires for a '97 540i. I drive the car at average speeds of 80 MPH on the highway. I currently have Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 P225/55 ZR16s on the car. I don't need the highest performance tire money can buy. I'm willing to trade some performance for cost and tread life.
check out tirerack, and see what your budget is according to tire, and the best part is they rate the tires according to perfomance, longevity, worth, etc etc
tire rack is awsome i too am in the market for new tires and rims
but for you
check out Continental CH95 tires, cheaper than the pilots and a little better if you ask me

BFGoodrich traction T/a (got them in the rear... so far so good)
or
Toyo 800 Ultra (those have the highest threadwear rating in the world... 700+)... they are only T-rated though, but after 30k miles you still can't tell that they are not new (on the audi).
