My 530i (E39) shimmies at 60mph and again around 80mph. I can actually see the steering wheel shake! I am on my 3rd set of tires and it has happened on all three sets. After the tires are rebalanced all is good for maybe 1000 miles, but then the shimmy re-appears. At my 75k tune up the dealer said all was okay mechanically...any thoughts for a first time BMW owner?
I've had about the exact same problem, just at lower speeds, 40-50 and 80-90...Took it to BMW, they said that my front right tire was defective and should be replaced...(manufacturer's defect) balancing would only fix the problem temporarially.
my e28 does it too. from what i hear its common for bmw 5 series. can be alotta things, tires, rims , thrust arms & bushings

My e39 does the same thing..... real bad when I first start to drive and the tires are cold but after that the shimmy is becomes almost unnoticeable. I have about 2000 miles on a new set of tires. They have been balanced tree times and I have been to the tire place five times. A local import performance shop said I most likely have a bad tire and need to rotate them from front to back, one at a time in order to figure out which is bad. I feel like telling the tire place to take the F-ing things off my car and give me my old tires back. ghead
