I got 525i now has 85000 Miles already, when do I need to change the timing belt?

what year is your car? if its a 1990 or older and has the original belt then you should replace it NOW. if its not the original, then you should replace it every 4 years or ~50k miles. if its a 1991 or newer then you have a timing chain and it does not require replacing.

i thought only 89 and 90 had the belt in the 5 series. (only the m20)

Im not sure what models have the belts..........my 540i has chains to drive the cam gear etc................BUT if you think you have belts and you are not sure when they were replaced last,change them tommorow !! You'll be a sad sad man if you break one and then find out you've got a full set of bent valves.... $$$$$$$ +++
