'Sup guys. I'm new to the forum, I acquired my first old BMW just recently 540iT Automatic w/Step. I'm also curious with the tail lights? Can I order these lights from the Dealer/OEM and what year should I ask for? Mine's a '99. These are just plug/play upgrades correct?
You have a touring (wagon) -- and I'd hardly call it "old" -- so your taillights are going to be different and, I imagine, harder to find. There are tons on eBay and at various online shops for the E39 sedan, but I've never seen any for the touring. I know they exist, I just don't know where to get them.
One principle is the same though: they are close, but not quite plug-and-play for earlier models. There are ballasts for each light that have to be mounted somewhere, and in the sedan an extra hole must be drilled in the body on each side. Go to bmwtips.com and look through the tips and tricks section for an article on a sedan upgrade.

The Ebay clear tails (celis look alikes) are plug & play...nothing to drill.....no balasts......
Ebay...PAVRAC, not bumping for him but he has a good product......r/
