1998 528i...whwn I shift into D it registers S2 and drives in 2nd gear. While in P, it registers S. The car will shift into S1 manually and S2, but all other gears do nothing but keep the car in 2nd gear at 4000 RPM's. Any thoughts?

Did you try moving your switch by the shifter from "M" to "A"? This puts it back into automatic shifting mode and the "s" on the display will change to "e".

I dont see a switch enabeling me to move from M to A. Is it somewhere else on the 528i automatic? My owners manual doesn't help either.
Sorry chap...can't help you here. My '95 has this switch next to the gear shift (switches from automatic to manual shifting)...thought it was standard. Maybe a "98 owner can help.

you guys have too different transmissions on your cars but 2 years ago I Had a similar problem- my D was showing R the car did not move period-when it turned out to be an electronic switch mounted on the left side of the tranny itself (outside the transmission) cost me $200 for the part to replace by myself. Cannot recall its exact name? possibly Neutral safety switch? yes? No?

Same problem here. Can manually shift to 3 and it rides OK. Please tell me more about this switch. I cannot seem to locate the part by description anywhere.
