Ladies and Gentlemen, I've got a 1979 528i with 322k miles on it. It has the ORIGINAL clutch! No leaks. Amazing machine. The paint is ugly and I'm looking at my 1st attempt at body work and paint. My big question is this: Is there a colour palette on line anywhere that gives me the basic colors the car was painted in? Also, what performance enhancements can be done to this old 6cyl without getting to far financially behind the eight ball?

color: (not sure but it is worth a try) call a local dealer and ask if the can give u the color based on the VIN #.

other than that.. there might be a sticker in the engine compartment that will have the shade of the paint used on ur car;-)

We bought it off the side of the road about 8yrs ago and have really enjoyed the handling characteristics. Until we got a MiniCooper S Conv, IT was our "fun" car. What I'm looking for is something that shows me all the colors the e12 528i shipped in. I found one somewhere on this site for the e39 model. Thanks for your reply.

Great story
I used to drive a 75 530, the very first US yr for 5ers. Have you looked for the color name sticker? Tell us what it looks like; there were not that many and I know just about all of them. My girlfriends 'was dk blue, but I had abunch of bimmers back then so I probably had a 2002 or bavaria the same color as yours..
Post some pics and for color, try to get one at he end of a door in some good daylight. Polish out a spot the never gets sun and you will have darn near original color for a start.

I am EXTREMELY impressed. I can only hope that my baby lasts that long.

My original clutch was replaced at 162K miles when I supercharged the car--it was just too much power.
