I have a ‘90 525i and I am trying to hook up a new stereo.. I have power to the unit, it plays cd’s, display works fine, but I cannot get sound to go to the speakers.. I really do not understand how this works.. Is there something/ some wire that I am missing and not hooking up?? I know that i'm only supposed to hook up the positive wires, and when i do that, still no sound...
The car has an external amp, so the wires for the speakers won't be hooked up at the front dash.
the amp is located in the trunk ( left hand side. pull the side carpet out and it's tucked in there. you'll see lots of wires ( all the speaker wires). so you'll have to test them to see which speakers which. be careful with the tweaters at the door, if you hook them up directly to the deck you'll blow them ( put a cap on them).
so what youre saying is that i will pretty much have to wire the speaker wires directly to the stereo (excl. the tweeter) once i have them figured out?? sorry its rather confusing.. i have heard that i need to bypass the amp and also that i cant.. what to do?
also, a different question.. where can i find a kit or something that will allow me to place a european license plate on the front bumper??
If you use the menu on the left and navigate to upgrade - stereo, theres more info there as well.
When I upgraded mine I used the existing wires that go from the head unit to the speakers (or the amp). I wasn't aware there was an amp as standard, thats pretty good if there is - its more than you would get in other cars of that age.
Mine is a european model so maybe the setup is different.
Hope the link helps.
