This has been going on for a long time, but neither mechanic it's been to can figure out the problem within a couple hours and I'm not going to pay $70/hour for a whole day of troubleshooting.
I'm not entirely positive these two things are related, but I'd be willing to put some money on it because the suspension has more or less been eliminated from the equation. When the windows are down, I can hear a slight metallic sqeak coming from under the front of the car whenever I go over small cracks or bumps. So of course you're going to think suspension; here's why it's not. Frist, I had the front suspension replaced last year. Second, my independant mechanic and the dealer have gone over the suspension several times and find it solid as a rock. Third, it only makes this noise when it's a sharp, quick bump--my friend's Bimmer has bad suspension and his creaks when we go over these enormous, 5-foot wide sloping speed bumps here on campus; mine doesn't do that. Only a quick jolt will make it sound like something's wiggling.
And the second problem, to which I think it may be related: there's a bit of play in my steering that I notice when I'm sitting still. If I wiggle the wheel back and forth, there's a moment that the steering wheel seems to turn but the wheels don't; and when it does engage, there's a slight "clunk" feel--not a sound, really, just a feel, like there's a loose bit down there somewhere and when you switch directions it takes a second to start tugging the other way. Furthermore, when I go over these bumps that make the squeaking noise, the wheel jiggles ever so slighly in my hands, and doesn't feel quite as rock-solid as a Bimmer should.
This is all very slight--most of my friends when they drive my car don't even notice--but it bugs the hell out of me. Mostly the squeaking. My independent mechanic couldn't even guess what it might be, and the dealer said the front control arm bushings were shot and that might be it, but even after I replaced those the sound and play in the steering remains. So if any of you have ideas, suggestions, and ways for me to check/test things (I kind of know my way around a car's basic systems, but I'm no mechanic, so please be specific if you can), I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
