Will lowering springs from an E39 body 540i fit on a 98 528i?
They may physically "fit", but I would bet that the spring rates would be way different due to the extra heft in the front end of a 540 as compared to a 528. May not be a big difference in the rear. My guess is that if you installed them, your 528 would be MUCH higher in the front, thus defeating the purpose of "lowering" springs.

The springs drops the car about 2". But since the body of the 540 is much heavier, your saying that it will not lower my car the same because of the spring rate and weight of the front ends? Anyone else have opinions on this? I appreciate it, thanks!
BTW, I'm excited to say that I am a new proud owner of a Black, 1998 528i. I still have 1994 318i, and I will post some pics soon. Any suggestions, on how to make my e39 look better, would be greatly appreciated.

"Spring rate" is how much a certain weight will deflect the spring a certain amount. If it is designed to hold the weight of a 540, then it will be stronger, and thus have a higher "spring rate". This means it will deflect less if less weight is put on it. Stock springs have a linear spring rate, meaning the rate is constant throughout deflection, whereas some springs (H&R for instance) have "Progressive rate" springs, which means the spring rate increases as the spring deflects.
This is a long-winded way of explaining that a 528 will not be as low as a 540 would be on a spring designed for a 540. How MUCH higher it would be is difficult to tell without knowing the spring rate of the spring in question and what load the spring sees in a 528 versus a 540.
