Speedo Jumps and Cruise not smooth

Hello I have a 1992 525i E34
1. When rolling slowly at a stop sign in traffic the speedo may jump to 100+ and an error message on the DIC Vehicle overspeed appears.

2. The speedo also at freeway speeds 65 -75 will bounce around 3-4 mph.

3. When the cruise is set at freeway speeds the car will hold steady for awhile then start hunting making the cruise not economical.

I am a new member and would appreciate any help,

possible speed sensor in differential ??

Hi in my opinion it could be one of these two things. The more easier solution which I recommend first is checking your speedo capacitors as one might have failed and is leaking fluid. This can result in the same symptoms you are having. The other problem could be a faulty speed sensor in the differential. Which also shows these kind of symptoms as well.

As Ivan mentioned, your speed sensor is attached to the differential. Its normal for a sensor to wear out over time. Also check your fuses as well. If replacing the sensor does not fix the issue, the problem may lie in the wiring of the cluster itself, and replacement of the cluster may be warranted.
