Speed sensor and speedometer, is there a link? :D

well, i know this mite be a dumb question, but i was wondering. i have a 1985 BMW 528E, my speedometer still isn't working. is there a link between the speed sensors on my brakes and my speedometer? or are these totally seperate things. No anti-lock brakes or anything. just lemme know, if not other things i can check to see if thats why my speedometer isn't working i already looked at the differential, but what do i need to focus on exactally? i see the sensors on the diff. but is there something i need to see if it looks wrong? just lemme know thanks!!

pull the speedo pulse sensor out of the differential, and make sure it's not cracked.

sorry, the sensor is located on the diff. it is held in place by 2 bolts. when you pull it out be carefull not to tear the rubber oring. HTH
