It looks like Zorro or someone with the initial of "Z" did it. Bastards. I hate to say it, but it looks like an insurance claim may be in order, because it's not going to cheap/easy to fix. I would guess the entire area, if not the door, will require a repaint. I would also consider reporting it to the police as well.

Blasphemy! I hope that A: You didn't do anything to deserve this, and B: The problem gets resolved soon (and without putting too much of a dent in your wallet). Best of luck!
did it get through the clear coat? if not youd be suprised what a touch-up place would charge to cut and buff it. if so, they should be able to fade it back in, the mah-vulus benefits of base-coat clear-coat.

Hey Jobman, I've watched a lot of CSI Miami Vice in my day, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a couple of years ago, so I wanted to share my forensic theory with you: this attack was personal. My rationale? If it were random, the key cut would be much longer, perhaps while the perp walked past your car. There wouldn't be the Mark of Zorro.
I think the "Z" mark, just above your driver's door handle (right next to the window YOU usually look out of) indicates that whoever did this knows you, or at least has seen you, or works with you, or something like that. So maybe you should start looking more closely at that office co-worker you laughed at last year at the New Year's party. Someone's been holding a grudge.
Just my theory, not that it helps you much. Again, you have my utmost sympathy...
