I currently have a Y2K Lexus GS400, currently looking to buy a different vehicle. I"ve been looking around and a 99-y2k 540i seems to be @ the same level of the GS400 a little less HP but has a 6 spd option vs my car only have an E shift. I just wanted to get some feedback from current owners as far as reliability and maintence on their BWM. I like the 330ci as well but it's too small for my taste.

I agree, go drive one....try a dealership first (CPO) and then get the private SALE thing goin on...unless you got the cash to get the CPO 99'-00 ... its got the warranty thing!
PS: the HP's arent as important as the FT-LBS!!!!! you'll the love pull in 2nd gear - HAAA, that puts a on my face just thinking about it!
you can't go wrong with a 540i. This is what i hear from friends, benz and lexus drives very stiff, when you eat a turn with your car you wouldn't feel as if your driving in a 540i.... Just get it
I just got rid of my 02 Lexus IS300 and got a 2000 540I 6speed. The car is so much fun to drive. totally different feel. Would highly recommend it..

I agree and I am new owner of 2001 540i. these cars are beasts and have power in any gear (if thats what you are looking for). Mine has the sport package as well. When i drive this car i feel like it is worth every penny i spent and will spend.
I'm not coming from a Lexus, but I used to own an Acura Legend GS. If the idea of a 6-speed luxo-sedan intrigues you, you definitely should consider a 540i/6. I also heartily recommend the Sport package, which comes with seats that are above comparison with the "fat boy" chairs likely found in your 400, not to mention some serious tires and wheels. In short, you should get a 540 if you like your quality/luxury and having a real back seat, but really want to feel like you are DRIVING your car.
One side benefit to oil prices gone wild is that used 540i's are more affordable at all years than ever before (prices are negotiable)...

Mine is an 02 540i 6 sport pkg, cold weather, & premium pkg. I cannot imagine driving anything else and enjoying it as much.
It really is not that fast around town. There are plenty of other cars with more HP, Cadillac for instance. But, on the open road there are not many other cars as smooth or as competant. Did I mention FUN?
Has anyone here ever added modifications to the 540, ie. performance chip, differenet suspension, etc. and if so, was it worthwhile?
And if you were considering an M5 (older one), would a 540 suit me almost as closely (also an older one) for a car that is a daily driver, as well as a car that can kick an ass or two?

There always going to be one thing for sure: Different cars for different people. That is to say different tastes based on our preferences/choices and money. Honestly? There is no wrong or right in these choices. It is relative!!

Quite right Bill, all this Toyota = crap etc. is just bullshit, you'll find plenty of people who prefere lexus, merc, nissan even, to bmw - and that's their right and privilage. Personally the 540i is the beast to own (except perhaps the M5) that's just my opinion. Test drive one and make your own mind up - unfortunately my mind is already made up for me, after driving an 523 for 5 months nothing other than an e39 will do. As I said, just take a run in it and make your own mind up - I doubt you'll be disappointed.
