Service light reset on 97 528ise se E39 - BMW Forum

Hi all,,,
Being the tight bastard that i am,, and my hatred of dealer prices, i have recently changed the oil on my E39 5 series.

Is there any way to reset the service lights on this particular M52 Vanos engine.
I remember someone telling me the trick with the paper clip for my old 3 series, but am not sure if its applicable in this case....

Its getting on my nerves being lit red all the time !!!!

Any ideas anyone ???

Didnt work !!!! tried it a few times and ,,no joy !!!

Might it be that the car is a 97 523 se,,, but has a 2.8 ltr twin vanos engine in it ???? might this be the cause of the failure ??

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

umm...I don't think the 97s had twin vanos. I thought that happened in 2000 for the 528.

Yeah,,,,its not a 97 twin vanos,,,its a replacement engine.

The previous owner transplanted a 2001 2.8ltr twin vanos (M52) engine, as the original had all coked up (or something along those lines).
Its only got 39,000 miles on the engine, although the speedo reads 116,000.

I have all the paperwork and receipts and even contacted the garage who swapped the engines,,,,cost him close to £3,000. !!!!!

It was one of the reasons i bought the car in the first place, engine should last forever now !!

PS: managed to sort out the service lights after all,,,,,had wire in wrong bloody pin !

Got Huge,,, one off, 20" , hand machined alloys. Were made in the states and sent over to uk,,, cost a hell of a lot of cash,, almost as much as the engine !!!

Use liquid paper and put a tiny dot on Pins 7 and 19. These pins are very difficult to see (small letters on the numbers).

The white liquid paper will help with subsequent resets.

Off topic but I notice the previous owner transplanted a new engine in your car because of overheating.
I wrote this cooling system overhaul that you may want to look at. Good preventive maintenance if the cooling systyem is above 80K miles.

I think all Beemers use pins 7 and 19.

Am I right?
