Service Engine Soon Light

Does anyone know if the Service Engine Soon light will reset itself if it was triggered by a loose gas cap on a 2000 540i Sport? My dealer told me that the light was a result of this but didn't know if it would reset if the gas cap was correctly screwed on.

While this is a somewhat new car to me, I feel that I know how to put a gas cap on. That being said, I evidently didnt get it on right after a fill up. Is there a trick to doing this on this car that Im not aware of? When I do put it on, it only seems like it wants to turn a quarter turn before locking into place.

Yes, the fuel cap will cause the light to come on....but so will 1000's of things...if you really want to know for sure, have your error code read by Autozone.

Ive already had it checked and it is the code for the gas cap. What I want to know is will it reset itself if the cap is correctly installed or does it have to reset manually?

Sorry, i misread....yes, it will adapt for itself and doesn't have to have anything else done to it...

Scary part to this discussion is that the DEALER didn't know if the light would reset!
