Over the weekend parked my car at an airport parkinglot (valet). Got back in the car Monday and saw the service engine soon light. Checked with the "gas cap" trick, no better. What are some causes for this light to come on. Emissions?

Only kidding - you would be best off buying (or borrowing if you can) an engine code reader. These read and tell you all the fault codes from the engines computer and come with a book of faults which relate to the code.
Sorry I can't help anymore but that light can mean a thousand and one things.
Extreme fluctuation in temperature (up or down) may affect the sensors resulting in your service engine soon warning. If that was the case, it justs needs to be reset.
