Hi folks, I am new to this forum and have not been able to find any section that gives a "how to" when looking at a well used BMW. Other forums, for other cars, often have this function to keep noobs like me from asking the same question every three months.
Does this forum have such a feature? If not, can anyone direct me to a site that will help me evaluate a 1975 530i, including known weak points, strengths, etc? I have talked with a fellow who is the second owner of a nice '75 530i that hasn't been driven in 15 years. I am an experienced gear head so I am not all put off by wrenching, crawling under cars, etc.
What I know about this car:
mileage around 100,000
blown head (he says was common to this year and engine)
replacement head and engine from a '74 Bavaria (?) comes as a package but is not installed
new shocks/struts and springs
nice body with a hint of rust between the front and rear doors (car is in PA - the rust belt, so this isn't surprising)
In closing, the current owner, who bought it from the original owner, runs a repair shop and has done most of the work on this car until he parked it 15 years ago. He makes a logical arguement that since the head was compromised and never pulled, that the engine should be swapped out due to contamination of the cylinders. He also says that the Bavaria engine should be a drop in, swapping out the carbureted intake for the injected intake.
Any and all comments, including off-line emails is appreciated. Thank you.
