Roof Rack

Sorry I've been away but after buying the 540 (THANKS FOR ALL THE RECOMMENDATIONS). I've been hard at work.

But as always after a run of hard work, vacation is coming up and it'll be time for some R & R.

Anyway, the family and I will be taking a trip from Philly up to Maine for July 4th with some assorted camping gear and golf clubs. While I think most of the gear will fit in the trunk, a roof rack will make the job easier (although much less attractive).

What I need to know is this. BMW sells a roof rack that hooks into the factory mounting points, and I've heard Thule has a similar one. Is the BMW rack compatible with Thule, is one better than the other? What other solutions do you all recommend.

(Interesting side note.)
The wife suggested renting a SUV for the trip. GASP. And here I thought we bought the 540 so we could do family road trips in comfort and speed. LOL

Why put miles and wear & tear on the nice car, RENT A U-HAUL! or better yet a 18 wheeler have your wife take over the wheel, wire/rig up back trailer latch, then pop the back latch via remote garage door opener in your car and you can come gung-ho driving crazy fast, hit the turbo boost switch and up, up and away your car is inside the back of the trailer.
