If you are talking about an e39 5er (1996-2003) unfortunately they will not just drop straight onto an e36 as the centerbore is larger on the 5er and I think the off set is different - though you may be able to get center rings (hubcentric) to allow fitment. However, If you are referring to an e34 5er, then they may fit straight on (the e34 also has a smaller center bore than the e39).
The things you will need to find out are:
The center bore size
The stud pattern
And the Offset
of the car they are coming off and your e36.
EDIT:
e39 = 5x120 stud pattern 18..20mm offset 74mm center bore.
e34 = 5x120 stud pattern 18..20mm offset 72.5mm center bore.
e36 = 5x120 stud pattern 35..42mm offset 72.5mm center bore.
So basically wheels from a 5er will not fit an e36 (properly anyway).
wheels which are interchangeable are as follows e36, e46 and z3.
Hope this helps
