replaced (and swapped) CPS - still code. what next?
Hello everyone.
Picked up a 1999 540i 6 speed a couple weeks ago. It promptly threw a code 71 (using a Peake II) "camshaft position sensor" cyl 1-4. This made sense as the car was running somewhat rough and is prone to stalling when coming to a stop. I purchased a new one, replaced, cleared the code and it returned within 5 minutes of running. From reading some posts afterwards it looks like I made a rookie mistake and bought one from BAVauto. I was actually ok with that as I was really hoping it was a simple sensor. but I went out there and decided to swap the functioning drivers side sensor with the faulty passenger side. I then cleared the codes and within 5 minutes it came back up 71. Bummer. So, presumably the sensor is most likely ok. So now I have a couple of questions:
1. If I assume the code is somehow correct how do I troubleshoot further? I have already cleaned the CPS connector at the top of the engine without results.
2. Could something else trigger the CPS fault? your best guess.
My best guess? ICV, Idle control valve !!
By "trying" to stall, the engine will try to recover without success, hence micky-mouse codes... Just another thought mate !!!
