REMOVE Power Steering Pressure Hose '87 BMW 535i

I have an '87 535i, and it runs like a charm. I noticed today that the power steering was acting strangely and making a whining noise. Immediately drove to my mechanic and he showed me that the power steering fluid was leaking from the pressure hose, particularly when I turn the wheel ALL THE WAY to the left or right and hold it there. The fluid really start leaking out! For now, if I don't do that (Who does that anyway??), I'm OK. Problem is, he quoted me $189.00 for the new hose and labor. Normally I could handle that, but times are very tight this month, and I'm trying to figure out an alternative. I'm a big fan of Pick-Your-Part out here in Southern California, and can often find parts I need off off old '86-88 5-Series, for 1/3 of the price of a new part. I realize that some parts MUST BE NEW PARTS, but some you can get away with used. I'm thinking this may be one of those. I have a basic mechanical knowledge, and am fairly handy with tools. Is removing the power steering pressure hose on an '87 5-Series all that difficult? Is it something I can do on my own at a salvage yard? Thank you.

A basic "Bodge it up" idea would be some 1" reinforced or braided hose, and some high quality hose clamps (Jubilee) !! Just an idea
The leaks are more common from the reservoir hoses !!

Thank you for your reply. Due to my budget constraints this month, I'm going ahead with a Pick-Your-Part salvage yard used hose, and just pay my mechanic for the labor until next month when I can buy a new one properly, unless you think it's something that I may be able to do myself? As long as I don't need a lift or remove part of the engine itself to get at the hose from either end. If not, I may be able to do it. On a scale of 1 to 10, what's the degree of difficulty installing that hose myself? Thanks.

Simple answer 4 out of ten !!
The hardest part is making sure it is the right length !!

Gotcha. Thank you. I think I'll try this myself. How many quarts of fluid does the '87 535i hold? What type of specific fluid (brand, type, etc...) do you recommend, or should I just save the old and re-use it?

Most ATF will be fine, a litre or so... Fill the res and start the engine, turn the steering lock-to-lock several times to purge any air and top-up if necessary !! Discard the old fluid !!
