Regular sized stereo in BMW

The stock BMW stereo (it's Blaupunkt really) really sucks and I'm planning to buy a new better sterero with better wattage and MP3 support. What I've understood is that the BMW stereo is slightly taller than the normal standard stereo size. Has anyone fitted a regular stereo in a BMW and what did you do make it look good? Is it difficult to connect the stereo as I assume the connections are completely different and I have to cut and reconnect the wires.

Actually blaupunkt is one of the best stereo companies out there, but on my e34, nothing special was required. I have a pioneer something head unit and and vr401 crossfire amp and 12" bmf crossfire(BEST MONEY CAN BUY)
