  • 2004 745 Li Recall
I picked up my brand new 745Li on July 12th and got to drive it exactly 7 days. BMW North America called me on July 19th and wanted to send a tow truck to my home to pick up the car and loan me a "USED X-3" to drive. They said my "NEW 745" was unsafe to drive.
Problem involves the power module?- car could suddenly stop (at any speed) and you would lose the power steering and power brakes. They said this involved 2000 new 5, 6 (2005 models) and 7 series BMW's with a 100 percent failure rate. Soooo...I am driving a "used and abused" 5 series that the dealer finally agreed to let me have until the problem is fixed. Needless to say... I would not let them tow my car only to have it sit somewhere for 2-3 weeks while BMW thinks about manufacturing the part. As of 7/19 they had not even begun. This is my first BMW purchase( have owned 2 Mercedes)... Am beginning to think I made a BIG mistake buying a BMW. Is anyone else facing this nightmare?

I too had my brand new 545 recalled after just one week of ownership and this is also my first BMW purchase (former E430 owner). I still have high hopes for the BMW becuase I couldn't get enough of the sports handeling of the 545 (while I had it). Unlike you however I did have my car towed to the local dealer where it has been sitting since 7/16 (I was at work when I got the call and didn't think fast enough). I was told that my dealer was expecting to receive the necessary parts to fix the car "sometime this week". I'll keep holding my breath untill I am behind the wheel again. I wasn't as lucky as you I got an '03 325i (base model) and by the way I still have to pay the car payment on the 545 that I'm not driving. I'm in Maryland and the lemon law here states that if a car is in for warrenty repairs for 30 days (cummulative, not just a single repair) under the covered warrenty period, then it automatically is classified as a lemon and must be purchased back, 18 days to go!!!!!!!!! The longer it takes for this repair the fewer chances BMW has for something else to go wrong! ghead ghead ghead ghead ghead ghead ghead

Ouch! I feel your pain and hope you get good resolution to this. I've owned a 1995 (525i), 1997 (528i), and now a 2000 (540i). This last generation of E39s always received great reviews, so I've always been fond of them. The success of this new generation remains to be seen. I hope they (BMW) get there arms around this problem very quickly.

Didnt make a mistake, just let the bugs get worked out.

Believe me, Mercedes has had many similar issues, you just didnt happen to have them on the models you bought. I know it really sucks, but it can happen to any high-tech car. sad but true

Anyone than could even consider a brand new 5 or 7 series has serious money!

Average 5 series price 30,000.00, average family car price 11,000.00
average wage 14,000.00

Think that says it all

To be perfectly honest I'm well surprised (pleasently) that BMW's are so popular in the US - not being funny but I thought you lot didn't like our European "toys".

Still they don't seem to sell my BABY version of the e39, the 523 (2.5l) over there so I guess a 2.8 is the lowest you guys would go eh! - and what would you make of the little 520?

I will try and take a couple tonight - but I warn you it's currently in bog standard condition and in need of a wash.

Sorry you feel that way. I have saved money for a long time and it took a lot for me to spend this much on a car.
Personally, you don't know anything about me (whether I am rich or not).
Maybe some day you will be able to buy a "new" BMW and if this happens, you will not feel the need to be so critical of those that are found in this situation.

He being rich is not his problem, apparently yours. You don't have to be jealous. He is just smarter and more hard working than you. So he deserves to buy whatever he likes. He posted it here to get comments/suggestions and not rude remarks. So grow up. If you utilize your time doing better things than writing bitchy replies, you might be able to buy a new bimmer one day.
Peace.

You know electronics always fails, its just like Windows 95 and 98 they crash all the time, but it was fixed with windows XP. BMW had a major electronic makeover with there I-drive system and they just fixing the bugs. I am thinking these bugs will be wiped out by the time the new M5 and the new M3 hit the road.

I think this thread has run it's course. Looks like the trolls are out again.
Posting something about being rich is done just to get a rise out of the members. Trolls do that on purpose. Ignore their posts. Hopefully they'll go away.
