Rear Sub Frame Bushes

Hi i have a 525i se E34 BMW.
When i pull away or change gear in the lower gears i feel a clonk come from the back of the car.
Well my car was in the garage the other day and the mechanic said it was my rear subframe bushes and that they are hard to do as you need a special tool.
Has anyone changed these and are they as hard as he said or can you think of anything else it could be.
