I have an E39 523i SE and have noticed today when I was driving with the window(s) open that when I go over a bump or rough patch of tarmac I can hear a "clink" sound coming from the suspension, it doesn't sound heavy, almost like a little metal plate jangling, any ideas what it could be?
If it is the front suspension I bet its stones in the brakes. I got the same problem. The mechanic removed the discs and took the stones out while the car was being serviced ... problem solved.
I had this problem as well. I eventually ended up moving the brake disc back plate slightly away from the disc and this cured the problem completely.
Hope this helps - let us know
