I have an E39 523i SE and have noticed today when I was driving with the window(s) open that when I go over a bump or rough patch of tarmac I can hear a "clink" sound coming from the suspension, it doesn't sound heavy, almost like a little metal plate jangling, any ideas what it could be?

If it is the front suspension I bet its stones in the brakes. I got the same problem. The mechanic removed the discs and took the stones out while the car was being serviced ... problem solved.

Nope - Had new front discs & pads 2 weeks ago and it still does it, thanks for the suggestion though. Anyone else any ideas?

My car does this too. Check to see if its coming from the front or rear.

My guess would be sway bar end links or a loose exhaust hanger.

good luck and let me know what works

Hi,

I had this problem as well. I eventually ended up moving the brake disc back plate slightly away from the disc and this cured the problem completely.

Hope this helps - let us know

Clobemonman.
