Hey guys, I just went by a local euro dealership and they had a creampuff of a car that I'm pretty much in love with.
its a 94 540ia. 125k miles on the clock, car looks nearly brand new. Its silver with dove gray leather interior, leather doesnt have a single crack on it. Nor the dash. Paint is nearly flawless and it is original, no body work..
only thing that concerns me is the steering is overly heavy. ive never driven an e34 540i before and was wondering how does it compare to e30/e36/e46's steering effort? those are generally decently light, this, just felt heavy.
other then that im probably gunna go there tomorrow and buy it, figure a supercharged 540i would be a fun daily commuter.
I know this wont help any as I haven't driven any of the cars you listed, but it seems a lot heavier than any other car I've driven -- from other manufacturers.
I noticed that my steering felt a bit heavier when I swapped out my "sport" front stabilizer bar for an M5 bar in my '99 540/6. And 12 years ago, I swapped out the meager (3/4") anti-roll bar in the front of my classic 1972 Corvette convertible for a big honkin' 1-1/4" front bar and 3/4" rear bar. There was a definite increase in the "heaviness" of the steering. But in both cases, that heavy sensation was more than offset by the handling improvement.
So I don't really know anything about the E34 540; my only point is that your observation regarding the heavy steering could be an effect of the larger stabilizer bar of the V8-powered E34.
