well i know its a newbie ? but i have always wondered about the numbering behind the bmw's. ghead the 5 series: is something like the 528e a 5 door(4 door and a trunk) and then a 2.8 liter engine? and the e is for economy. that made some sense, but then the 318, is that a 1.8 liter engine? and if this is true waht about the 328? thats a 4 door. can anyone clear this uP? i've just always wondered about the thinking behind the numbers, im sure its something simple.. thanks!

318is - 3 series - 1.8l or 1.9l (if late model e36)2 dr coupe
318i - 3 series - 1.8l or 1.9l (if late model e36)4 dr sedan
325e - 3 series - 2.7l 2 dr coupe(e30)
325is - 3 series - 2.5l 2 dr coupe
325i - 3 series - 2.5l 4 dr sedan
328is (96-99) - 3 series 2.8l 2 dr coupe
328i (same yrs) - 3 series 2.8l 4 dr sedan
528 - 5 series 2.8l sedan
all 5 series are sedans
but sometimes the actuall car has a differnet engine, such as the 325e from the e30 series. it had a 2.7l...also the 318 came with the m42 and m44. the m44 was late 90's which was a 1.9l. the e39 540 is actually a 4.4l and same with the e38 740il had a 4.4l not a 4.0l which you would first think from the badge.

e36_m3_Turbo pretty much covered the engine part of the answer, but in response to your query about the 3 the 5 or the 7...those first numbers (the "series") generally are representative of the size/luxury level of the car. The 3 series is the smallest, then the 5 series is the midsize, and the 7 is the largest and most luxurious. Now the 6 series has been added, which is a large coupe based on the 5's platform. And soon there will be a 1 series, which is a super-compact.
