I have pics for this car but I'm not at home, will do it later tonight.
I have taken the car for a test drive...it is absolutely fabulous on the road, plenty of power and it hugs corners like a son of a B!tch! haha It sounds wonderful and looks beautiful. It was work $65,000 new in 1994, so it was a pricey little bugger. The dealer I'm buying it from actually sold the car new to a Gynocologist.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any problems with this car and if anyone has any suggestions on what I should be looking for in terms of things to watch out for. I don't want to have any surprises 6 to 10 months down the road as I understand any car thats 10 years of age needs some things done to it no matter how well the car was kept.
You definately need to have it checked out - pay them for an insepction even if they say they already did one. It's absolutely crucial. Also the v8s back then had issues - you need to find out if the block has ever been replaced under warranty. You do NOT want a nikisil block, you want an alusil one. Research this extensively, you dont want to be stuck with it.

Thanks for your reply. How would I know that block is in fact an alusil one? Do I need to take it to a dealer to figure this out or can I do this by simply doing a visual inspection of some sort?

Are you sure that's a V8??? I thought 530i is an inline 6 not a V8
As for the car problems in the future, don't expect problems except for regular maintanance. Check the brakes/rotors and the L.E.D display board lights. They usually go out arounf 75/80K MILES
1. The then new 3.0 V-8 with four overhead cams, four valves per cylinder. This engine is very similar to the 4.0 V-8 introduced one year prior to this one in the 740i and 740iL
2. What SpOrky is referring to, I believe, is the cylinder walls which were created by depositing a layer of nickel on the aluminum (galvanic action) Instead of the steel cylinder liners. I think such technology was introduced to the BMW motorcycle engines prior to the 5 series. And The nickel problem was solved so quickly by BMW to avoid further rashes. As SpOrky said, I would double check on the repair history through the dealers record just in case.
3. This engine did feature chain-driven camshafts and it did Employ four knock sensors two per bank.
Note: the problem with the nickel is related to certain type of Gasoline and it was more prominent in England.
