Hello there! i am debating about picking up a 88 533i m5 clone. I still has the 533i stock engine (m30 i believe). It runs and drives fine, however it has absolutely no 2nd gear! you have to go from 1st rite to 3rd. What im wondering is, is there a parts list somewhere to replace the 2nd gear and adjoining parts? or is there something small i should start looking at first? Are these transmissions easy to replace the guts in? I haven't bought it yet, but its in my shop, and the guy renting it has it in there with a bunch of shit piled on it. Oh, and im pretty sure it was blown out while being drifted around town. Any help would be great, i love the look and sound of this 5 and id love to own it.

Hey thats great, thank you so much. Now im wondering if its the gear its self, or the syncro. Is there a way to see inside there without dropping out the transmissions? sorry i just want to figure out as much as possible before i commit to buying it.

As far as swapping for another used 5 speed my understanding is, i can use any 5speed from the 533,633, and 733 but i have to use the donor car drive shaft. Is that correct?

You better be getting one heck of a deal for this car since your going to need an entirely new transmission. You shouldn't need to replace the driveshaft as the tranny is the same. The 633, and the 7 all have different driveshaft lengths.
This is not a car I would purchase. The second you said it might be blown from "drifting around town" is an instant deal breaker. Why would you want to buy a car that was abused? That car is probably in way worse shape mechanically then just a trannsmission. I don't know what your budget is, but I know you could find something better.
