Question Playing DVD in OEM e39 Navi Unit?

***This was originally a question that I posted in response to a 6-series navi question thread. I felt that moving it here would increase my chances of getting e39 specific advice***

The question is:

Can I install the item pictured below and easily modify it to play dvd movies?

playing-dvd-oem-e39-navi-unit-navi.jpg

If so, could I insert DVD's in the OEM BMW unit and see it on the screen, or would I have to add a separate dvd player and splice that into the input wire?

Thanks!

I'm going to answer you AGAIN with the same answer I gave you in the 645 forum...NO that unit will not stream DVD movie files...the unit is only capable of reading DVD files. take it to an aftermarket dealer and see what they are able to do, but the OEM equipment is not designed to play DVDs

I'm not an IT geek at all, but isn't DVD data totally different from DVD streaming media? Still, I like the idea of using the display for playing DVDs. You can always hook it up to a separate DVD player, but to me the trick would be to do that AND keep it functional as a NAV display too.

Sorry I'm no help on this one, but I can offer encouragement and opinions every time! Good luck to you, and most of all let us know your outcome so we can answer the question the next time someone asks it!
