Original key doesn't start the car, backup does

2001 525i.

The original key (diamond shaped key fob)doesn't start the car anymore, but the backup works just fine.

The original still locks and unlocks the doors (no dead battery), but when I try to turn it over, I get nothing.

I re-initialized the original key (I got the lock/unlock confirmation), but it still won't start the car.

Any ideas?

Maybe the original key needs a new battery.

Sounds like the original key went bad. the FB (remote) portion of the key is separate from the EWS (security) portion of the key. the battery is fine if the remote lock/unlock works. Even witha dead battery the key will still start the car. Sounds like you need to replace the key.

Overtime the keys get worn down and the car has trouble recognizing the key. This is why a new key works fine.
