Our 2002 525 finally got into the yellow zone indicating the time for an oil change. Got to it this weekend and after changing the oil with Mobil 1 5-30 synthetic I used the trip odometer method to reset the LED indicators on the dash. Worked really well and was very easy. I was very surprised to find the mileage on the oil when using the on board oil computer. Almost 9,000 miles since the last oil change. How times have changed since the old days of every 3,000 miles
You bring up a good point for discussion. What do others think about the life of synthetic oil?? How many miles should high quality synthetic oil last when used in a normal passenger vehicle?
I go 5K and then change the filter....and go another 5K before changing oil. I've sent in samples and the results confirmed the intervals were well within tolerances.
I always change the oil on a car when i first buy it,you never know how long its been in there,i try and change it about every 6 month after that, even with fully synth, mines about due a change now.
I know I may get criticism for this but I owned an 85 Pontiac Fiero for a while and when purchased I completly built the motor. .60 over 11.5:1 comp ratio solid lifters custom cam and all the porting, gasket matching and balancing you could imagine. needless to say I doubled the output of the motor. I ran Amsoil in that engine and went 15k between changes. I did however change the Mobil-1 filter at 5k and 10k. I noticed only slight discoloration of the oil and very little "breakdown" even after 15k. Oil has different properties when you get into the higher grade stuff like Amsoil and Royal Purple. The new Castrol edge seems promising but I haven't been able to to do any real world tests to prove its merit. Like all things you get what you pay for.
