I have a 2001 530i. I was told that the car only needs an oil change every 15,000 miles. I bought the car last summer with 46,000 miles and last week the oil light came on. I had to add a quart of oil. The bmw service center where I bought the car said that is normal for the car to eat oil and told me to add the oil. Is it normal for the car to eat oil and should I have the service center look into the reasonwhy I had to add oil? The car is not due for service for 5,000 more miles. What should I do?
adding little bit of oil is normal due to high temps etc.......although BMW says 15.000 I like to get rid of it at 5.000 as an old habit plus it is a matter of personal preference; but it is not a must; these things are not written on stones; however they do use oil with the proper chemical properties.......good luck

Thank you for your reply. I would hate to be rip off by the dealer. My BMW is a certified car and before the warranty runs up should I have them check the engine for problems?

Absolutely......Also they will place it under their diagnostic machine; if any problems come up they will fix it prior to the warrant exp. date.....and I believe if anything gets changed; it will carry its own warranty (for that particular part) even though the vehicle warranty has expired ( double check and ask your dealer about this ).......good luck
