Oil Change/oil Inspection Light Reset 2002 525i

My first posting:

I recently purchased a 2002 525i and it keeps showing that I need an oil change. I proceeded to lift the hood and I couldn't even spot the oil filter!! I know, I know, I am new to this BMW game...

Anyway, can someone please tell me where it is, where to get a new one (filter), and simple directions to change the oil and reset the oil inspection light (preferably without having to buy a electronic resetter; I am an Electrical Engineer, so feel free to get technical)?

Also, my BMW has a telephone button just below the Audio button and just above the time button on the console, and I am not sure if it has the capability for cell phone hands-free hook up or if it is just there to look cool. help!

One last thing:

I bought the car and it has what looks like water spots on the windsheild; I tried windex, a very fine steel wool scrub brush, acetone.... NOTHING WORKS! It looks terrible... Any suggestions?

Welcome to the BMW club. How do you like her so far?
The oil filter is in a black canister with a plastic nut that is part of the lid. I believe it's around 23 mm large.

It's easy to spot once you know that your looking for that.

If you want to reset your service lights - you open the diagnostic port (little screw cap about 3" diameter) and it should have a bunch of pins in there. You simply switch the key to position two in the ignition and then take a wire stripped on both ends and ground pin 7 for 3 - 4 seconds.

Do it for longer (7 - 9 sec) if you want to reset inspection lights.

oh and the cell phone thing, I could be wrong - but I believe it is a button for when the car comes with the "car phone"

MS..welcome to the forum...here is a link with some pictures..although for an older car..the idea is the same......newer has what looks like a black nut // 36 mm socket.....good luck

I remember now - I had the hardest time finding a tool to get that cap off!
