I am having a problem with the OBC readout - odometer, info and gear selection. The display will go crazy for no reason when I am driving. It will display random letters and scroll from right to left. The only way to reset/fix it is to stop and restart the engine.

The other instruments (speedo, tacho etc) on the cluster are fine.

The readout from the OBC display in the centre console area is fine, so it must be a problem in the instrument cluster.

Could this be the capacitors about to go or could it be the AA batteries???

What do the AA batteries do? Are they just used for the SIL?

What car is it exacty ? For AA batteries I think your thinking of early electronic dashboards of the 1980s, like E28, E30. These had re-chargeable NiCad batteries that eventually leaked all over the printed circuit, corroding it and making it useless. The E46 has no such batteries.
